Kingston Eye Institute is proud to be able to offer a solution for patients requiring treatment for retinal diseases such as Macular Edema following Retinal Vein Occlusion, Age Related Macular Degeneration and Diabetic Retinopathy.
Lucentis is the common thread between these conditions and the latest advancement in treatment. Although there is not a drug available to restore lost vision, Lucentis can help prevent vision from getting worse or even improve the remaining vision.
The drug is designed to bind to and inhibit VEGF-A, a protein that promotes growth of abnormal blood vessel in both Wet AMD and Macular Edema. Lucentis blocks this VEGF, which results in the reduction of leaking and swelling in the retina.
Lucentis is administered through an injection into the eye. It is a day procedure done using a topical anesthetic to the eye. After the injection, an antibiotic drop is used for a week to prevent infection.
